It seems that these days music is made in ultimatum: If you write catchy songs, the message you present must include a vapid set of one-liners and cliché riffs backed up by a hipster image and a small army of teenage girls. On the other hand those removed from the mainstream have bloodied their lips biting down too hard on the next big thing in indie music. It seems like a loaded equation in either sense; your band is a marketable investment or your band doesn't eat.
