He formed the quintet Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers with Art Blakey in 1955 for a studio album recorded on the Blue Note label, and used that band name throughout his career. Silver and this band helped to create the rhythmically forceful branch of jazz known as 'hard bop', which combined elements of rhythm-and-blues and gospel music with jazz.
