Afro-beat duet Hijas del Sol was formed by Piruchi Apo Botupá and her niece Paloma Loribó. The duo had their breakthrough while participating in an African traditional festival in 1992. After settling in Madrid, Spain, the Equatorial Guinea natives started getting involved in local cultural activities, meeting Manu Chau, who became their mentor soon after. In 1996, Hijas del Sol debuted with Sibeba, which was released by independent label Nubenegra
