Herman Cody is a member of the Navajo tribe born on the reservation in northeastern Arizona at a place called Grand Falls. His father was a native practitioner. Herman was born in a hogan, a mud and log dwelling with a dirt floor and no modern amenities. He grew up herding sheep like most Navajo children of his era. He did not know English prior to enrollment in school at five years old. In high school he played in a country-western band as a rhythm guitarist and vocalist.
