Born in Albania in a family of traditional musicians and singers, Gjovalin Nonaj starts music at the age of 5 on his first instrument, the çifteli (lute with 2 strings), under the guidance of his uncle Gjok Nonaj. Afterwards he played the clarinet, horn and accordion and ended up at the age of 19 as the leader of a folk group. He earned the second prize at the contest for traditional a capella song at Treviso (Italy) at the International Folk Festival in 1996.
