Kunie Fujii (FUJII Kunie 藤井久仁江?) (1930 - 2006) began her studies of shamisen and koto under her mother, Keiko Abe, one of the recognized masters of jiuta-style shamisen playing. As a young girl, Kunie had to practice shamisen and koto under cover of a thick futon to prevent people from hearing. During WWII rules prevented anyone from being able to perform or even practice. In 2002 Kunie Fujii was designated as one of the Living National Treasures of Japan for Jiuta (Shamisen story telling).
