The multi-faceted and experimental wind player Esa Pethman was in the frontline of Finnish third-generation jazz, along with Christian Schwindt and Otto Donner. Pethman was the first to follow Jan Johansson's groove and bring folk influences into Finnish jazz, and was thus integral in the creation of an idiosyncratic and 'more Finnish' style. In the liner notes, Pethman explains: "To me, pure melody is the essential element in all music and the starting point of my work."
