Ernst Christian Hesse (1676-1762) was a German composer and violist. Hesse was born on 14th April 1676 in Großengottern, Thuringia. While working as a chancery clerk at the court of the Landgraf Ernst Ludwig at Hessen-Darmstadt he attracted the attention of the Landgraf; he thus not only completed his studies in law, but was sent to Paris, where he met and studied under Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray. He also studied operatic style in Italy under Antonio Vivaldi.
