John Robinson Pierce (1910-2002) was an early pioneer in computer music. Through his research in information theory and electronics, he was one of the joint authors (along with Claude Shannon and Barney Oliver) of pulse code modulation (PCM) - the digital representation of analogue signals that provides the basis for digital audio in CDs, for example. Pierce's book An Introduction to Information Theory: Symbols, Signals & Noise (1980) includes chapters on cybernetics, psychology and art.
