
Dorothy Gertrude Howell (1898-1982) was an English composer and pianist. Howell was born on 25th February 1898, grew up in the Handsworth area of Birmingham, and received a convent education. At the age of fiteen she went to the Royal Academy of Music, where her teachers included John McEwen and Tobias Matthay. Howell achieved fame with her symphonic poem Lamia, whose premiere was given by Henry Wood at the Proms on 10th September 1919, and which he conducted again that same week.
