In the early 1960s, when the Bossa Nova was in its infancy, almost all of the young musicians would meet at the Beco das Garrafas, the alley of the bottles, so named because the neighbors would toss bottles down at them in an effort to quiet their conversation. They would discuss music and then split up into various groups and play in one of the handful of small clubs lining the alley. Edison Machado, Dom Um Romao, Milton Banana, and Chico Batera were always the drummers of choice.
