
Bernard Garfield (May 27, 1924 - ) is an American bassoonist, composer, teacher, and recording artist. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he is best known for his long tenure as the principal bassoonist of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1957 to 2000. Mr. Garfield studied at New York University (1948 BA, English Literature) and received a master's degree in musical composition from Columbia University in 1950. He received the ARCM diploma from the Royal College of Music in 1945 and an honorary doctorate in 2009 from the Curtis Institute of Music.
