Ben Colder was a pseudonym of country singer/songwriter character actor Sheb (Shelby F.) Wooley (1921-2003). As an actor, he's best known for his performances in the film "High Noon" and the 1960s TV western, "Rawhide." (The show also introduced the world to a young Clint Eastwood.) In pop music, his "The Purple People Eater" proved a "monster" hit in 1958. Wooley created the character "Ben Colder" as a character for the TV show "Hee Haw," for which he also wrote the title tune. Colder's music consisted of solid parodies of hit country tunes.
