In 1989 the National Museum of Mali conceived a project on the 'Study and collection of musical heritage' which, among other objectives, sought to preserve the country's musical heritage by assembling a collection of traditional music instruments, organising an exhibition - including the publication of a catalogue of musical instruments - and establishing an archive of sound recordings and videos. This project started to be implemented in January 1991 in collaboration with the International Institute for Traditional Music in Berlin
