Astreja is a joint project created in 1975 by russian contemporary composers and performers Sofia Gubaidulina, Victor Suslin, Vyacheslav Artyomov, Valentina Ponomareva and Mark Pekarsky (the first three were the core of the group). The main idea of Astreja was pure naive intuitive improvisation, i.e. composers performed their improvisations only together, only live, only on by themselves, and only on musical instruments on which they were not regularly educated to play - neither in conservatory, nor by self-teachers.
