Al-Balabil (Arabic: البلابل), or “The Nightingales,” are three sisters from Nubia who became one of Sudan’s most popular singing groups. Starting out singing in a folklore group, they learned musical traditions of both Nubia and other cultural areas of Sudan. When they formed البلابل in 1971, they were considered Sudan’s answer to the Supremes. Sisters Amal and Hadia now live in the United States. The third sister, Hayat, still lives in Khartoum, but rejoined the others for a reunion concert in Detroit in 2008.
